The partitioning activities in this lesson require students to use the same skill developed in the previous lesson, but with a different whole, a circle. The use of a circle allows students to find halves, fourths, and thirds of a different shape. Students will begin to see that there are many ways to partition a shape, but that the parts must always be equal in space to be considered a fraction of the whole. The task is presented in an open ended way to encourage students to persevere in problem solving by exploring different methods of partitioning the circle into equal parts.
