Unit 3, Lesson 5# Count by units of 7 to multiply and divide using number bonds to decompose

EngageNY 60 min(s)Support for English Language Learners

In this lesson, students count by sevens, composing up to and then over the next ten. For example, they might count 7, 14, and then add 14 + 6 + 1 to make 21. (In doing so, they utilize the "make a ten" strategy first introduced in Grades 1. and 2.) Students use number bonds to decompose and identify appropriate number pairs, and they review the commutative property and the relationship between multiplication and division as strategies for multiplication and division.
