Unit 5, Lesson 13

Identify a shaded fractional part in different ways depending on the designation of the whole

EngageNY 60 min(s)Support for English Language Learners

This lesson continues building understanding that comparisons of fractions are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Students divide and label unit fractions in different ways on the same model to see how defining the whole differently affects the meaning of a fractional part. For example, when a fraction strip representing 1 whole is divided into four equal parts, each part represents 1/4. But when half the fraction strip represents 1 whole, the whole fraction strip represents 2 wholes and each part represents 1/2.
