EngageNY 60 min(s)Support for English Language Learners

In this lesson, students use pictures and number bonds to represent fractions greater than 1 whole. For example, they represent 5/4 as composed of five 1/4s, and also as composed of 4/4 and 1/4. They conclude that if the number of parts in a fraction is greater than the number of equal parts in the whole, then the fraction describes more than 1 whole.
