In this lesson, students use the Read-Draw-Write (RDW) process to solve two-step word problems involving the four operations. (For example, "Lena picked 17 apples, and her brother picked 19. Lena's mom has a pie recipe that requires 9 apples. How many pies can Mom make with the apples that Lena and her brother picked?") In the process, they use number bonds, tape diagrams, arrays, or other representations and write equations with a letter standing for the unknown.
