By the end of the lesson students will be able to compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators by comparing them to benchmarks of 1/2 and 1, explain their reasoning when comparing fractions Using the "Fraction Bucket" cards, have classroom discussion about how the cards could be positioned in front of the student (least to greatest). What about the "Fraction Bucket" cards helps the students make the decision? The teacher pre-selects 5 cards, one for each bucket, to demonstrate how to place them correctly to the class. Using one of the cards, the teacher places it on the correct bucket card while thinking out loud to the class.
