Adding and Subtracting Fractions with the Same Denominator

Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education 60 min(s)

In this lesson, students will learn that a fraction 1/b is a quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts and that a/b is the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b and how this connects to what is a numerator and what is a denominator. They will use different fraction models and representations throughout so that students understand there are a number of ways to model or represent fractional quantities and how they are added and subtracted. The Grade 4 standards call for students being able to add and subtract fractions with like denominators. However, it would be helpful for students to understand that fractions with unlike denominators can also be added.
