Mixed Numbers

Understand how to decompose a fraction into a sum of fractions with the same denominator in more than one way, recording each decomposition by an equation, and how to justify these decompositions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model. This lesson extends the understanding of operations with unit fractions to mixed numbers; it reinforces the concept of a whole being equal to any fraction.
