Unit 6, Lesson 9# Use the place value chart and metric measurement to compare decimals and answer comparison questions

EngageNY 60 min(s)

In this lesson, students begin comparing decimal numbers by representing lengths, masses, or volumes on a place value chart and reasoning about which measurement is longer than (or shorter than, heavier than, lighter than, more than, less than) the other. In the process, they discuss the common misconception that comparing decimals is analogous to comparing whole numbers, so, for example, 0.65 must be greater than 0.7. By converting both numbers to the same units (for example, converting 0.7 to 0.70), they realize they are able to make accurate comparisons.
