In this lesson, students convert mixed number weight and time measurements to smaller units. (For example, they convert 1/4 pound to 4 ounces and 1/2 hour to 30 minutes.) They begin by using tape diagrams to explore the relationship between units (showing, for example, that every 1/16 pound is equivalent to 1 ounce, and shading 4 ounces to make 1/4 pound). Then they move on to using a strategy of creating equivalent fractions (reasoning, for example, that 1/2 hour = 30/60 hour, and since every 1/60 hour is 1 minute, that 1/2 hour = 30 minutes).
