Unit 1, Lesson 11

Multiply a decimal fraction by single-digit whole numbers, relate to a written method through application of the area model and place value understanding, and explain the reasoning used.

EngageNY 60 min(s)

In this lesson, students begin to model multiplication of decimals by single-digit whole numbers. They first multiply numbers written to the tenths place, using a place value chart and representations of place value disks. Students compare the model to the standard algorithm. For example, students solve 3 x 0.3=0.9. Then, students multiply numbers written to the hundredths and thousandths. Students compare the place value chart to the area model. Finally, students use the area model to represent the distributive property.
