Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education 60 min(s)

Using Fraction Strips, Number Lines, and Area Model to Multiply a Fraction Less than 1 by a Fraction Less than 1. Students build on their prior experiences in this unit by multiplying a fraction by a fraction. Prior to this they have learned how to use visual models to multiply a fraction by a whole number. This lesson begins with multiplying a unit fraction by another unit fraction using the two models students have already learned (fraction strip and number line) and add the last visual model for this unit, the area model. Familiarity with area model for multiplying whole numbersMultiplication of whole numbers can be represented by the area model and a number lineConsistent use of visual models (fraction strip, number line, etc.)
