Unit 4, Lesson 17# Relate decimal and fraction multiplication.

EngageNY 60 min(s)

In this lesson, students begin relating whole number and fraction multiplication with whole number and decimal multiplication. They use their knowledge of multiplying unit fractions, along with the aid of a place value chart to multiply a decimal times a whole number. For example, they will multiply 0.1 x 4 as 1/10 x 4 while noticing that the 4 moves from the ones place to the tenths place. Then they use area models, rectangular arrays, and tape diagrams to model multiplication of decimals times decimals, such as 0.2 x 0.1.
