In this lesson, students begin applying their knowledge of area of rectangles to rectangles with fractional sides. They use hamburger patty paper to tile larger rectangles with unknown dimensions. They discover that one of the dimensions contain fractional sides, such as 2 1/2 pieces of patty paper. Then they decompose the dimensions into whole number and fractional parts. Finally, they will find the total area of the rectangle using partial products.
