In this lesson, students will multiply a mixed number by a fraction using area models, tape diagrams, and/or number lines. Solve word problems that involve the multiplication of a mixed number by a fraction. Estimate the size of a product of a mixed number and a fraction in comparison to the size of its factors. Similar to Lesson 12, this lesson includes various representations that students can use to multiply fractions. Because the area model is the best one for more complex computations like a mixed number times a mixed number, you should make sure students at least understand and can make use of that strategy.
