One way to measure variability in a data set is to look at the mean (average) distance of data values from the mean of the data set. To help students understand the name mean absolute deviation, define the term absolute deviation as distance from the mean. In later grades, students see deviations as signed numbers, and then absolute deviation is just the absolute value of the deviation.
