Unit 6, Lesson 9# The Distributive Property, Part 1

Open Up Resources 40 min(s)

In this lesson students recall the use of rectangle diagrams to represent the distributive property, and work with equations involving the distribute property with both addition and subtraction. Apply the distributive property with addition and subtraction to generate equivalent expressions Represent the distributive property with side lengths and areas of rectangles and use the diagrams to write equivalent expressions. Let's use the distributive property to make calculating easier. Learning targets: students can use a diagram of a rectangle split into two smaller rectangles to write different expressions representing its area and use the distributive property to help do computations in their head.
