Approximating the area of a circle

Illustrative MathematicsVaries

The goal of this task is twofold: Use the idea of scaling to show that the ratio Area of Circle does not depend on the radius. Use formulas for the area of squares and triangles to estimate the value of the real number satisfying Additional work (refer to task here when it is ready) will show that where is the circumference of a circle with diameter 1. The teacher may need to provide some guidance for part (a). Supplying the pictures in the solution should be sufficient but it would be good to let students brainstorm possible methods first before supplying the pictures.
