Identities (10)-(12) are called the laws of exponents for integer exponents. They clearly generalize (6)-(8). Consider mentioning that (10)-(12) are valid even when a and b are rational numbers. Make sure they know rational numbers refer to positive and negative fractions. The fact that they are true also for all real numbers can only be proved in college.
