Infinite Decimals
Unit 7, Lesson 7

Infinite Decimals

EngageNY 45 min(s)

Students develop an intuitive understanding of the placement of infinite decimals on the number line. The purpose of this lesson is to show the linkage between the various forms of a number, specifically, its decimal expansion, the expanded form of its decimal, and the placement of the number on the number line. Given the decimal expansion of a number, students use what they know about place value to write the expanded form of the number. That expanded form is then used to determine the placement of the number on the number line by looking at increasingly smaller intervals of negative powers of 10, beginning with tenths, then hundredths, then thousandths, and so on.
