Task# Pick Two

Illustrative MathematicsVaries

Kindergarten students should see addition and subtraction equations, and student writing of equations in kindergarten is encouraged, but it is not required. This task could be used by teachers as an opportunity to gauge their students' ability to write equations and whether they may be ready to begin a discussion about what the equal sign means. Because of the limited reading skills of kindergarten students, this task should be introduced by the teacher, followed by the students carrying out the activity. Although this task asks for totals that make '6,' it may be repeated using any number through 10 to address K.OA.3.
