During whole group time, put 5 cubes or counters on the five frame and tell the following story to the class: You have 5 toys. Roll a number cube and use that number in your problem. Use questions to begin the problem solving process. By the end of the lesson students will be able to model and solve a subtraction, result unknown problem, explain their strategies for solving the problem.
