In this lesson, students use the 5-groups to represent numbers 6 through 8, connecting a pictorial representation to the abstract. First, they add to a 5-group of linking cubes to get to 6. They represent the action on a number bond. Then they write a number sentence (5 + 1 = 6) and make connections between the two representations. Finally, students repeat the process for numbers 7 and 8.
