Excerpt 2: Counting & Cardinality in Grade K (Pages 4-5)

Progressions for the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics

Draft K Progression on Counting & Cardinality and K-5 Progression on Operations & Algebraic Thinking

Supporting grades: K12345

Description: One of a series of documents describing the progression of a topic across several grade levels, informed both by research on children's development and by the structure of mathematics. Students usually know or can learn to say the counting words up to a given number before they can use these numbers to count objects or to tell the number of objects. Students become fluent in saying the count sequence so that they have enough attention to focus on the pairings involved in counting objects. To count a group of objects, they pair each word said with one object.
