Description: One of a series of documents describing the progression of a topic across several grade levels, informed both by research on children's development and by the structure of mathematics. Compare problems build upon Kindergarten comparisons, in which students identified "Which is more?" or "Which is less?" without ascertaining the difference between the numbers. In Grade 1, students solve problems of all twelve subtypes including both language variants of Compare problems. Initially, the numbers in such problems are small enough that students can make math drawings showing all the objects in order to solve the problem.
