Description: One of a series of documents describing the progression of a topic across several grade levels, informed both by research on children's development and by the structure of mathematics. At Grade 6, students extend their fluency with the standard algorithms, using these for all four operations with decimals and to compute quotients of multi-digit numbers. By reasoning about the standard division algorithm, students learn in Grade 7 that every fraction can be represented with a decimal that either terminates or repeats. In Grade 8, students learn informally that every number has a decimal expansion, and that those with a terminating or repeating decimal representation are rational numbers (i.e., can be represented as a quotient of integers).
